Norway’s Atlantic Road is famous for its bridges, ocean views and dramatic coastal weather.
But when darkness falls over Averøy, the sky can occasionally offer an entirely different experience.
The northern lights – aurora borealis – can sometimes appear above Sveggvika and the coastal landscape surrounding the Atlantic Road.
The photographs on this page were taken at Sveggvika and show just how different the landscape can feel when green aurora moves across the night sky.
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. But when the conditions come together, they can turn a dark evening by the sea into something extraordinary.
Can you see the northern lights on Averøy?
Yes, the northern lights can be visible on Averøy.
The most reliable northern lights conditions in Norway are found much further north, beneath the main auroral oval. However, increased solar and geomagnetic activity can make the aurora visible considerably further south in Norway as well.
For that reason, we do not present Sveggvika as a destination where northern lights sightings are guaranteed.
What we do have is a location by the sea, dark autumn and winter evenings and the possibility that nature may occasionally put on a spectacular display.
When can you see the northern lights?
Darkness and clear skies are essential.
Visit Norway notes that aurora activity is statistically strong around autumn and early spring, particularly September–October and March–April, although northern lights can also occur throughout the darker winter months.
On Averøy, your chances depend on several factors:
- a clear night sky
- sufficient solar and geomagnetic activity
- limited light pollution
Even with all of these conditions, there is never a guarantee.
The aurora decides when the show begins.
Aurora above the sea
One of the special things about Sveggvika is its location beside the ocean.
When the northern lights appear, the dark sea, historic buildings and open coastal landscape create a beautiful setting.
Reflections on the water can add another dimension to the experience, while the familiar landscape takes on an entirely different character after dark.
And when conditions are good, you may not need to travel far at all.
Dress warmly, step outside and look towards the sky.
How to improve your chances
There is no formula that guarantees an aurora display, but a few simple steps can help.
Move away from strong artificial lighting and allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness.
Clear skies are essential. Cold temperatures themselves do not create northern lights; the important point is that clouds can block your view of an aurora occurring high above them.
Checking an aurora forecast together with the local weather forecast can also help you decide when to head outside.
And remember that cameras can sometimes capture weaker aurora colours more clearly than the human eye.

An autumn or winter journey along the Atlantic Road offers a very different experience from the long summer days.
The evenings are darker, the coastal weather becomes more noticeable and the area can feel quieter.
If the northern lights appear, consider them a bonus rather than something your entire journey depends on.
