From the Atlantic Road to Geiranger and Trollstigen

If you are staying on Averøy or travelling along Norway’s Atlantic Road, continuing towards Geiranger and Trollstigen can become an experience in itself.

Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen combines fjords, steep mountains, waterfalls, viewpoints and some of Norway’s most famous hairpin bends.

The official scenic route is 104 kilometres long and runs between Langvatnet and Sogge Bridge, including a ferry crossing between Eidsdal and Linge.

This is a journey worth taking slowly. The road itself is part of the experience, and many of the best moments happen when you stop the car.

Geiranger – fjord and mountains

Geiranger is one of the natural highlights of the journey.

The narrow fjord is surrounded by steep mountains, waterfalls and dramatic scenery, with several viewpoints overlooking the village and fjord.

During the main summer season the area can be busy, so allow plenty of time rather than treating Geiranger as simply another stop on the road.

Flydalsjuvet – the classic Geiranger view

Flydalsjuvet is one of the best-known viewpoints above Geiranger.

The viewpoint is arranged on two levels and provides wide views across the Geirangerfjord and surrounding mountains.

It is an ideal place to stop before continuing through the mountain landscape.

Ørnesvingen – Geirangerfjord from above

The road from Geiranger towards Eidsdal climbs through eleven hairpin bends known as Ørnevegen.

At the top is the Ørnesvingen viewpoint, overlooking Geiranger, the fjord, the Seven Sisters waterfalls and the historic Knivsflå mountain farm.

This is one of the stops we would definitely make time for.

Ferry from Eidsdal to Linge

Part of Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen includes the ferry crossing between Eidsdal and Linge.

Always check current ferry times before travelling, particularly outside the main summer season.

Gudbrandsjuvet – experience the river up close

Further through Valldalen you reach Gudbrandsjuvet.

Over thousands of years, the Valldøla River has carved deep potholes and unusual formations into the rock. A purpose-built walkway brings visitors close to the gorge and rushing water.

It provides a completely different experience from the open fjord landscapes around Geiranger.

Trollstigen and the Trollstigen Plateau

Trollstigen is famous for its eleven hairpin bends and dramatic mountain landscape.

At the Trollstigen Plateau, paths and steps lead to several viewpoints. The largest platform extends over the edge approximately 200 metres above the winding Trollstigen road.

Important information for 2026

As of September 2026, the Trollstigen road section is closed to through traffic for the remainder of the year because of rock falls.

The Trollstigen Plateau and viewpoints remain accessible from Langvatnet via Valldal, while the road is also open as far as Trollstigfoten from the opposite side.

Conditions and access can change between seasons. Always check current information from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration or Norwegian Scenic Routes before travelling.

How much time should you allow?

The scenic route itself is 104 kilometres long, but this is not a road we recommend rushing through.

Viewpoints, ferry crossings, photography, meals and short stops can easily turn the journey into a long day.
