Atlantic Road Norway – more than just a drive
The Atlantic Road is one of Norway’s best-known scenic drives, where bridges, ocean and coastal landscapes come together. Norwegian Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen runs for 36 kilometres between Kårvåg and Bud, passing through the exposed coastal landscape of Northwest Norway.
It can be tempting to simply drive across the bridges, take a few photos and move on. Our advice is to allow time for stops along the way. Some of the best experiences begin once you leave the car.
1. Walk the coastal trail on Eldhusøya
Eldhusøya is one of our favourite stops along the Atlantic Road. The 550-metre elevated walking path circles the island right beside the sea and is designed to be accessible to a wide range of visitors. The trail is open throughout the year.
It is an easy way to experience the coastal landscape up close without needing a long hike.
2. Experience Storseisund Bridge from different viewpoints
Storseisund Bridge is the iconic image most people associate with the Atlantic Road. Its appearance changes with your viewpoint, the weather and the light.
Use the designated parking areas and viewpoints along the National Scenic Route and take the time to experience the landscape away from the car. The route has several purpose-built rest areas and viewpoints.
3. Stop at Geitøya
At Geitøya, short walks take you to small hilltops and down towards the water, offering wide views across the archipelago. There is also a path leading to a fishing spot below the Geitøy Bridge.
Boats also cross from the quay to Håholmen, a historic fishing village on a nearby island.
4. Try fishing at Myrbærholm Bridge
Fishing is part of everyday coastal life in this part of Norway. Myrbærholm Bridge is one of the places along the scenic route where visitors can get close to the water and try their luck.
If you are travelling with a fishing rod, it can make a memorable break during your road trip.
5. Continue to Farstadsanden and Askevågen
The Atlantic Road experience continues beyond the most photographed bridges.
Follow the National Scenic Route towards Farstadsanden and Askevågen. At Askevågen, a viewing platform at the end of the breakwater provides a close encounter with the Atlantic Ocean and wide views of the surrounding coast.
The changing scenery – bridges, beaches, exposed rocks and fishing villages – is what makes the full route worth exploring.
6. Discover more of Averøy
If you have time, explore more of Averøy beyond the Atlantic Road itself.
Kvernes Stave Church is one of the island’s most important historic attractions, while Averøy also offers coastal heritage, hiking opportunities and archaeological sites.
Spending a little longer on the island gives you a much better sense of the landscape and the communities that have grown around the sea.
7. Finish the day with dinner by the sea
After a day exploring the Atlantic Road, settle in for a meal by the water.
